State Bound: Grissom Edges Huntsville For 6A Section 8 Tennis Championship

(04/21/2009) The Grissom boys tennis team defeated Huntsville by one point to claim the 6A Section 8 tennis crown on Tuesday. Grissom finished first with 62 points, followed by second place Huntsville (61), and third place Bob Jones (57). Florence finished fourth with 46 points, followed by Buckhorn (24), Hazel Green (21), Decatur (17), Austin (16) and Sparkman (11).

Huntsville led Grissom by a single point going into the doubles finals, and had a team in each of the finals. Grissom's Daniel Little/Peter Valach clinched the number one doubles title 6-2, 7-5 over Huntsville's Roth/Leahy, and Bob Jones won both the number two and number three doubles finals.

Peter Valach won the number two singles championship, defeating Huntsville's Matt Leahy 6-1, 6-3. Justin Jong defeated Florence's Cole Jacobs 6-1, 6-1 to win the number three singles title. Jonathan Guarin overcame an ankle sprain in the last two games to hold on and beat Bob Jones' Clint Johnson 6-4, 6-4 to win the number six singles championship. Daniel Little was runner up to Huntsville's Connor Roth (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) in number one singles.

Grissom's victory was quite an accomplishment for a team that lost four players out of the top six last year and struggled through several injuries to key players during the season.

Both Grissom and Huntsville will advance to the State 6A Championships in Mobile on Monday and Tuesday.

2010 Grissom Tennis Team The Youngest Varsity Team Ever

(04/21/2009) When Coach Mike Weckwarth's tennis team opens the 2010 season at home against Florence on Tuesday, they will no doubt be the youngest varsity team Grissom has ever had in any sport.  Grissom's two most experienced players (and the only two returning from last years Section 8 championship team) are freshman Richard Trieu and eighth grader Kevin Sommers.  Newcomers in the top six singles spots include eighth graders Taylor Ausbon and Chase Moran, and seventh graders Grant Ginsberg and Will Talbert.  Although they don't have an abundance of high school experience, most of the players spent last summer and fall honing their skills by playing tournaments.

Stay tuned for an interesting season ...

Another chapter is being written in the rich tennis history of Mike Weckwarth, who returned to coaching this season at Grissom High.

"I realized I had missed it," Weckwarth said.

Weckwarth coached Grissom in 1986-87 and guided Randolph's boys to Class 1A-3A state runner-up finishes in 2002 and 2003. In between, he coached the men's and women's teams at UAH (1992-94). He also served as pro at Valley Hill Country Club for 22 years and assistant pro for the City of Huntsville.

As a high school standout, Weckwarth was unbeaten in regular-season matches for a six-year span at Randolph. He then played collegiately at Samford before transferring and becoming an All-Gulf South Conference player at Jacksonville State.

He joined parents Fred and Jean, sisters Cindy and Lisa and brother Craig making up Alabama's Tennis Family of the Year in 1975.

Weckwarth replaced Jim Payne as as boys coach at Grissom this season, responding to a request from tennis enthusiast Scott Little, who volunteers with the junior-varsity team.

Little's son, Daniel, plays No. 1 for Grissom. Czech Republic exchange student Peter Valach is No. 2, followed by Dustin Jong, eighth-grader Richard Trieu, Jonathan Guarin and seventh-grader Kevin Sommers.

After inheriting a rebuilding situation at Grissom - which lost four of its top six players from last season - Weckwarth said he'll employ his same coaching philosopy.

"Win or lose, compliment yourself, pick out something to work on, be in the best physical shape you can be in, don't worry about the past, and have a positive attitude," he said.
